Future Plans - Puckman

Having done the full standup cab for a MAME box, I'd like to play with a JAMMA machine.

The JAMMA standard allows different game PCBs to plug into a standard interface to the controls, monitor, speakers and power supply. Introduced in 1985, a slew of newer games adhere to the standard. There are also adapters available for non-standard/earlier games as well as a project to connect a PC to a JAMMA harness.

Some goals:

  • It should be easy to switch between a PCB and the MAME PC.
  • Video, sound and the standard JAMMA controls would go through a J-PAC into the JAMMA harness.
  • Extra controls, etc. should all be easy to swap... a molex or quick connects that can be swapped between a PCB (say, Killer Instinct or a CPS-II) and the PC (via the I-PAC/OptiPac) should do the trick.
  • The PCBs should be as easy to swap out as possible. Any motherboards for cart based games (Taito F3, CPS, etc.) should be mounted with easy access to the cart area.
  • A spare area for mounting optical drives (think Dragon's Lair) and hard drives (KI ) to allow these to just stay in the cab.
  • also, I want a pony...

So the plan:

  • Upright cab using the Puckman sideart, monitor bezel and marquee. Using the giant monitor I have in mind may present some issues...
  • Exchangeable control panels.
    • The stock Puckman CP with 4-way leaf switch joystick (if possible; the Pac-Man/GALAGA stick would do as well...)
    • A multi-use/MAME CP. Like my old setup with two-player 6 button config, trackball and a spinner. The sticks and six of the buttons (three per player) would go through the JAMMA harness, extra buttons would go through the Midway KI/Mortal Kombat harness.
    • Need to have a light gun...
  • For the PC side, the Arcade VGA video card and the J-Pac to interface to the JAMMA harness. I also want the swank I-pac4 to replace my old I-Pac. And yeah, the Opti-Pac would be cool as well. Can ya tell I like Andy's stuff ?
  • For the PCBs, I want a pull out tray with one of the Capcom CPS-2 'A' boards mounted on one side, with a mount for standard boards on the other. Ideally, I'll leave space to mount some of the other base motherboards... I'm thinking the Neo-Geo MV-1, a Sega Titan, and pretty much anything else I can jam in there...
  • The 27 inch beast of a monitor, the Betson Imperial IMP 44-4070-RT. Holy, giant great goodness. And it'll do 800x600 for the upright Doom sessions. Sweet!
