Stealth Drives - Overview

Stealthed DVD Drive

The idea of a stealth mod for a CD drive is about five years old at the time of this writing (summer 2006). I first came across it in a [H]ardOCP forum back in late 2001.

The idea is simple: attach one of the 5.25" drive bay covers to your CD/DVD drive tray. When the drive is closed it looks like you don't have an optical drive at all.

One of the earliest mods I came across is here. Most recently the idea was in an issue of Max PC.

I've seen a ton of different styles... ones with just a clean cover, ones with the LED poking through, etc.
My drive is a simple, clean cover mounted with velcro. This allows the drive to be opened by pusing on the face plate and is reversable. That is, you can peel off the velcro and use your drive normally or reuse the drive bay cover for a different drive.

OK, if you think that by threatening me, you can get me to be your slave, well... that's where you're right, but - and I'm only saying this because I care - there are a lot of decaffeinated brands on the market today that are just as tasty as the real thing.
