Magic 8-Ball

Another wall based on a Penny Arcade. This one is of the mysterious magic 8Ball...

Starting with a black background, I selected a 550 x 550 circle. Holding the shift-key down will make the elipse select tool stay a circle.

Next, I stroke the selection with grey (#707070) 10.5 pixels wide. This will be the rim around the glass window in the 8ball. A gradient or bevel could be done to make it look more 3D, but I stuck with grey.

For the floating dice thingie, I start making a triangle from path points. Here's my attempt at an equilateral triangle. It's not even close to centered, I'll do that bit later.

With the triangle points down, I select from path...

... and fill with a nice blue (#1104C5). To make the edges look smoother I stroke the selection 1 pixel. I used black to stroke, as it looked a bit too large.

Now I needed to center the triangle in the circle. I selected the blue with the magic wand tool and grew the selection by around 10 pixels. Then I floated the selection and moved it to my best guess of the center.

To make the triangle look like it's floating in murky mystery goo, I want a nice black gradient coming in from the edges. With the foreground color black, I used the 'FG to Transparent' gradient.

After making a new layer I started making the goo. Using the gradient tool set to radial at 90% opacity, I selected the start outside the triangle and ended the gradient near the center.

All three radial gradients on a new layer. with them on a seperate layer you can redo them as needed to get a look you like. I then set the layer transparency to about 90% to add to the murky look.

Now for the awe inspiring text. A white sans serif font, with center alignment. To make it look more realistic, you could add an inner bevel to the text to make it appear sunken.

Lastly we need to get it all centered. I selected the grey ring and grew it's selection by 10 pixels. Next, it's cropped and the canvas size enlarged to it's final size, 1280 x 1024.

The final wall.
